Review Title : Alexander the whatever, but not great Hits: 71

Alexander (Colin Farrell), the King of Macedonia, conquered 90% of the known world by age 25. Not bad considering, most of us at that age are going around in circles looking for a job. It is said that he never lost a battle. By the time of his death at the age of 32 in 323 B.C., he had seized over 2 million square miles in land. Alexander was known as one of the greatest military leaders in the history of warfare, but you wouldn't know why by watching this movie. One very long, very boring chore of a movie to watch ensues.

Olympias (Alexander’s mother, Jolie)’s one of the dialogues is "In you lives the light of this world. Your companions will long be shadows in the underworld, when you will be the one, forever young, forever inspiring - never will there be an Alexander like you - Alexander the Great. But after seeing this movie I DO NOT agree with that, I’d rather call him Alexander the boring, or Alexander the talkative, or Alexander the whatever, but not what she called her dear son.

Considering the fact that Alexander conquered 90% of the known world, u expected the movie to explore why he was such a great leader and a warrior, but alas the director had other ideas. He got stuck in gay fantasies, long(really long) talks in between the battles.

Its one of those long 3 hours movie, and the director makes sure you know it’s a long movie. I kept waiting for the action to pick up, but that wait never got over. There were only two battles , one of Gaugamela and one of xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />India. I think these people could have done much better when they are making a movie on Alexander, who it is said possessed the greatest military mind of all, had they focused on his prowess as the greatest conqueror, then focusing on his dubious relationship with Hephaistion (Leto).

My thoughts after the movie were like.. why did Alexander ever existed. If there weren’t any Alexander, Oliver Stone wouldn’t have made this movie and I would have saved three precious hours of my life.

If you are interested in knowing about Alexander the Great, see a documentary on his life on History channel. DO NOT go to see this movie.
