HDFC Bank has been a very good performer, but there have been lot of related problems in Retail banking customer services.

I'm a customer for six yrs now, and i admit that rarely i need to go to the bank. The main problem which i face always is regarding the communication of non-delivery of mailers or failed transactions, by the bank to the customer.

Many times it has happened that due to some problem if a cheque is not processed, the same will keep lying with the back for weeks together and will not be intimated to customer. I've to call the Helpline and then findout what has happened to it. Same thing happens in case of couriers/posts being sent by bank. If it is returned for what soever reason, the same will not be intimated to customer. Again after waiting and waiting, one has to call the customer service and ask what has happened? Then they'll cooly say Sir that has been sent back to your home branch, please collect it from there. What the heck? I know the customer base is very large, but most have an access to emails specially in cities. They can atleast email and tell what happepened to your transactions or mailers? Many times i'd to take leave from office to collect the things from bank or to enquire about such things.

Secondly, the quarter balance funda. Even if by mistake your balance is not maintained for one quarter, then you're gone. All services will be charged after that, even your calls to phonebanking, your cheque books, everything. It doesnt matters to the bank that either you're a new customer or an old customer. They will not even bother to remind the customer about low balance before quarter end or in between. Inward cheque bounce charges are very high and quarter balance charges are even higher.

Hope the things improve in near future.
